With so much to do, we tend to create bucket lists over time. What is a bucket list? It’s basically a to-do-list of the things we most want to see and experience in our lifetime. Every item is special to its creator, whether that's baking a cake for the first time or getting behind the wheel of a big rig. With so much to think about, it can be hard to begin putting pen to paper to start your list off.
Your bucket list is yours to do whatever you want with, but to make things easier, we asked around the Distinct Cremations team for a bit of inspiration.
One of the more adventurous members of the Distinct Cremations team, Steve’s ultimate bucket list ambition is take in the view from the top of the world. Literally. Always looking for his next challenge, Steve’s sights are firmly set on scaling the likes of Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro.
Fun fact: Mountain tops are one of the most popular destinations for scattering ashes, especially if the deceased was a keen adventurer in life. In fact, the ashes of Sir Edmund Hilary, the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest are interred at a memorial close to its peak
Taking a turn into the realm of a travel bucket list, one of Kirsty’s must-dos is a sight-seeing trip from the comfort of a luxury locomotive. The jury’s still out on where though, maybe the Canadian Rockies, Swiss Alps or the landscapes of India? Who knows.
A quintessential must-read for the bookworms among us, finishing Ulysses by James Joyce is Tony’s top pick. Starting, stopping and inevitably re-starting it over the years has pushed the determination to finish the icon of Irish literature to the top of Tony’s bucket list.
Top tip: Much like the events in Ulysses, arranging a funeral can affect us all differently. Literature touches people in different ways, so when making funeral arrangements, why not try to include elements from the deceased’s favourite book or poem?
Another entry to the travel bucket list, Nathan’s ultimate destination is The Maldives. From its gorgeous scenery and wildlife to world-class hospitality, visiting The Maldives lets you enjoy your own slice of tropical paradise away from the hustle and bustle.
As we’re able to travel more freely, many people are now incorporating their favourite destinations into their funeral arrangements. David Bowie, the Starman himself, chose to have his scattering of ashes take place in Bali, a place he’d held close to his heart throughout his life.
With its dramatic bright lights shining against the night sky, the northern lights are one of the world’s most beautiful natural phenomenon. For both of our Sarahs (that’s right, we’ve got two of them) they can’t wait to catch a glimpse and tick the dancing lights off their bucket lists.
If you’ve lost a loved one who loved the beauty of the northern lights, why not let them join them? Not literally, of course, but you can name a star after them in their memory.
Sometimes a bucket list isn’t about doing something new, it’s about revisiting the memories that mean the most. Maxine’s list-topper is to head back to Kenya and retrace her steps from the holiday of a lifetime: part wedding, part honeymoon, all magic.
With the big wide world at our feet, sometimes we forget to take the time to appreciate what’s on our own doorstep. It’s all about discovering something new in and around her home country for Lisa, exploring away in her trusty caravan. Their next destination is a spectacularly spooky excursion around York and Whitby.
Have our team inspired you? Or is there something on your bucket list that beats all of those? Whatever it may be, there’s no time like the present to get out there and start crossing items off your bucket list!
