Making a final farewell memorable

At Distinct Cremations, we believe that everyone should have the farewell they want. Understanding the choices available lets you adapt each option to make the send-off truly personal.

The importance of personalising a memorial

Those who have arranged a funeral say personalisation is important, but thinking of ways to do so can feel overwhelming at such a difficult time.

Understanding different types of cremation

Before you can add your own touches, the first step is deciding which type of funeral is the right one.

The right choice depends on what feels right for the person being remembered. There are two types of cremation services available. Both can be deeply meaningful.

A funeral with a service

Funeral Service Hero
  • Follows the more familiar and traditional structure for a goodbye
  • Family and friends gather at the crematorium for a ceremony before the cremation takes place
  • Offers a clear and recognisable time for grief and togetherness
  • Can be shaped in many ways to feel personal with music, photos, videos, readings, tributes, keepsakes and more

A direct cremation

Holding hands on sofa
  • A simple, dignified option where the cremation takes place without a formal service or mourners at the crematorium
  • Lower cost and a less complicated approach
  • Plan a celebration of life that is entirely on your own terms, at your own pace
  • Flexible time and place - can be arranged to suit loved ones' schedules and travel arrangements

Adding a personal touch to a crematorium service

For those who prefer the structure and comfort of a formal service, the ceremony can be shaped to reflect a life fully lived.

  • A crematorium service will be held at a specified time. A longer service suits larger families, offering more time to arrive, depart, and share memories.
  • Music is one of the most powerful ways to personalise a memorial, saying what words sometimes cannot. Our research found that 77% of services were personalised with music.* Include a piece played at their wedding, favourite songs from their youth or live music from a local musician.
  • Readings and eulogies give family and friends the chance to speak about their loved one's humour, kindness, quirks and achievements. A eulogy doesn't have to be solemn; it can be warm, funny, and celebratory.

A service led by family and friends is more personal, but could add more pressure. Alternatively, a professional celebrant or officiant can write a eulogy and lead the service for you.

Personalise a memorial with a celebration of life

One of the greatest advantages of a direct cremation is the freedom it offers for the celebration of life that follows. Families and friends can come together in a special location that holds memories of the person they've lost.

You might choose to take part in an activity your loved one enjoyed.

  • Walk along their favourite beach or through woodland where they regularly hiked.
  • Gather together in a restaurant for a special meal held in their honour.
  • Hold a gathering in the garden, where they enjoyed spending their time.
  • Attend a sporting or music event they never missed.
  • Host a quiet, private ceremony at home in their favourite season.

There is no logistical need to organise everything quickly. Families can take time to plan, share stories and memories and scatter ashes as part of the memorial. The result is often a gathering that feels genuinely personal.

The small touches to personalise a memorial

Once you have chosen your cremation, there are small touches you can add to personalise a funeral service that make a difference.

Several of our crematoriums offer enhanced personalisation such as our full-sized canvas wall backdrop. This can display personal images of your loved one or a themed background, helping to create a space that feels less like a formal ceremony and more like a true tribute.

At all of our funerals, you can include flowers and personalised service stationery with photos of your loved one.

The importance of talking about your wishes

Planning ahead is one of the kindest things you can do for those you'll leave behind. When families are left to make decisions in the immediate aftermath of a death, they often carry an additional burden: the worry that they're not getting it right.

Remove any uncertainty about your wishes by writing down and sharing your preferences for the type of service, music, readings or the place you would like ashes to be scattered. That way the people who love you can focus on remembering, rather than guessing.

You may wish to set up a funeral plan to arrange and pay for a funeral ahead of time.
