What are the Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plans?

Our Plans let you pay for certain funeral costs in advance and includes a cremation

Who is Distinct Cremations?

Distinct Cremations is a direct cremation and funeral plan provider who, with our parent company the Westerleigh Group, owns all the facilities necessary across mainland Great Britain to be able to take care of the deceased throughout the whole cremation process.

Distinct Cremations is the trading name of Distinct Funeral Plans Limited, a member of the Westerleigh Group that have been assisting and providing families with quality services in beautiful settings for over 30 years.

Who is the Westerleigh Group?

Distinct Cremations is wholly owned by Westerleigh Group Limited. Westerleigh cares for around 50,000 funerals a year and is the UK’s largest privately owned Crematoria operator.

Who is the Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plan for?

Unless you are otherwise advised in writing by Distinct, the Plan is available to Planholders who are aged 18 or over at the date of Application.

If you are paying for your plan by monthly instalments over 5 or 10 years you must be a UK resident and aged between 50-74, at the time the Plan is taken out.

The funeral provided by the Plan must be conducted in mainland Great Britain.

The Plan does not cover the costs of repatriation.

What will the Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plan provide?

The Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plan will provide the guaranteed services included in the Plan.

All Plans guarantee to cover the following services:

  • Guidance by our professional telephone team 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Support to help you to complete and sign the necessary paperwork for the cremation to proceed.
  • Collection and transport of the deceased within Great Britain in a specialist funeral vehicle.
  • Bringing the deceased into our own professional mortuary facilities.
  • Care and preparation of the deceased, who will be dressed in a simple gown for cremation.
  • A simple coffin.
  • The cremation service and fee.
  • Return of ashes or option to have them scattered in our gardens of remembrance.
  • The cost of a single Doctor’s fee or Coroner’s fee.
  • The cost of removal of mechanisms such as pacemakers (which must be removed before a cremation).

What won’t the Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plan provide?

It does not include any kind of service, procession or the services of a minister or celebrant. Other items listed below are also not included:

  • Embalming.
  • The cost of special requests such as memorials, flowers, catering, newspaper obituaries.
  • Any additional charges that are passed to us due to changes in regulations, tax, laws or generally accepted practice.
  • The cost of repatriation from outside mainland Great Britain.
  • Fees for a celebrant or minister to conduct the service.
  • Transportation in a hearse, or the provision of limousines.
  • Viewing the deceased once taken into our care.
  • Dressing the deceased in specific clothing or with personal belongings.

Other Plan limitations include:

*Any taxes. Value Added Tax is not currently charged on a funeral service. However, if this or any other tax becomes chargeable on a funeral service or part of it, your Personal Representative must pay the tax at the time of the funeral.

What are the prices of the Plans?

The Distinct Cremation Prepaid Funeral Plans are designed to meet our customers’ different payment requirements and needs. For example you can make a single payment, spread the cost of your Plan over 12 monthly instalments at no additional charge, or take the plan out over 5 or 10 years. The prices are below:

Unattended Cremation Plan £1,499 £124.91 per month (12 monthly instalments)

Intimate Cremation Plan £1,799 £149.91 per month (12 monthly instalments)

If you are aged between 50-74, and paying in instalments over 5 or 10 years, the price you pay will depend on your age at the point you take out a plan.

Prices valid at 18/04/2022. Prices are subject to review by Distinct Cremations. If at the point of application, the Plan price has changed for any reason, we will advise you of this before we set up your plan and there will be no obligation for you to continue.

How can I pay?

Payment methods include Credit or Debit Card, Cheque and Direct Debit payment over a period up to 12 months, 5 or 10 years. You can pay for your plan online, over the telephone by speaking with one of our advisors or, by enclosing payment with your paper application form.

How is the money I pay protected?

If you pay for your plan in a single payment or over a period up to 12 months, the money needed to cover your cremation is transferred into the Distinct Funeral Plans Trust. The Distinct Funeral Plans Trust is completely separate and legally independent from Distinct Cremations.

  • The Trust is managed professionally and independently by Sterling Trust Corporation.
  • Zenith Actuarial conduct an annual actuarial valuation of the Trust Fund, which determines if there is enough money in the Trust Fund for Distinct Cremations to meet its liabilities and promises to Planholders.
  • JW Hinks, the appointed auditors conduct annual audits of the Trust’s accounts.

What happens to the money in the Trust Fund?

All the money you pay for the Plan goes into the Trust Fund’s bank account. From the money held in the Trust:

  • Distinct Cremations is paid an allowance for the marketing, administration and lifetime customer management of the Plan.
  • There are annual costs for Trust management services, audits, valuations and other scheme expenses.
  • The remaining funds after deductions are available to pay Distinct Cremations, after the funeral has taken place, who agrees to provide all the guaranteed services.

We publish a Report on the Distinct Funeral Plans Trust annually and it is available upon request.

What happens if there is not enough in the Trust to pay for the funeral?

In the unlikely event that the Trust does not have enough money to cover the future cost of funeral services promised to Planholders, Distinct Cremations would still honour the guarantees made to Planholders. Distinct Cremations is part of the Westerleigh Group who own a nationwide network of crematoria and even in extreme circumstances should still be able to meet the promises made to Planholders.

What happens to my money if I pay for my plan over 5 or 10 years?

If you purchase a 5 or 10 year instalment plan, we will purchase a whole of life insurance policy from Scottish Friendly where we are the beneficiary. This will be used to pay for your Distinct Cremation when the time comes. If you miss a monthly instalment and it remains unpaid for more than two consecutive months, your plan will be cancelled. If your Plan is cancelled, you will not be able to restart your Plan.

What happens if I pass away before I have finished paying for my plan?

If you pay for your plan over a period up to 12 months, we will provide the services included in your Plan as long as your Next of Kin or Executor pays the outstanding instalments before the funeral takes place.

If you pay for your plan by instalments over 5 or 10 years, and have held the plan for at least 12 months, there will be no further charge for the services covered by the plan and we will deliver your Distinct cremation.

If you die within 12 months (the moratorium period) of the start date of your plan we will receive no payment from Scottish Friendly. Your Next of Kin can ask for a full refund of instalments already paid or they can pay the difference between the amount already paid and the lump sum plan price at the time you took out your plan to receive the benefits of the plan. If your death is a result of an accident, there will be no more to pay for the services covered by the plan and we will deliver your Distinct cremation.

How can I be sure Distinct Cremations will still be there to deliver my funeral?

If you pay for your plan in a single payment or over a period up to 12 months, the money for your cremation funeral will be protected because it is legally separate from Distinct Cremations. In the unlikely event that we were no longer in business it may however mean that we would be unable to provide the cremation funeral or cover set out in your Plan. If this happened the Trustees of the Trust would work with alternative funeral providers to continue to provide services to Planholders.

If you pay for a plan over 5 or 10 years, the money to pay for your cremation is secured by a whole of life insurance contract we have in place with Scottish Friendly. In the unlikely event that we were no longer in business an alternative funeral provider would be appointed to continue to provide services to Planholders.

What will I be sent after I apply for a Plan?

Once your Application has been received, your Plan will be set up within 14 days and you will be sent your Planholder pack. This will contain confirmation of the Plan you have purchased, the amount you have paid, what is covered and how to claim. It will also contain a pack to be given to your Executor.

What happens if I move home?

You must inform us so we can update our records. There is no charge for this, as your Plan is portable, and all the Plan guarantees will still be honoured.

How to claim

When the person who the Plan is for passes away the Executor should telephone Distinct Cremations at any time 24 hours a day on 0808 296 7221.

What happens if my family or representative doesn’t use the Plan?

If the Plan is not found until after the Planholder’s funeral is arranged, or if your Next of Kin or Executor chooses not to use the Plan, they can cancel the Plan and receive a refund of the original amount paid for the Plan.

For plans payable over 5 and 10 years, you will be entitled to a partial refund of instalments paid.

Cancellation

You can cancel your Plan at any time.

If you pay for a plan in one single payment or instalment payments of up to 12 months

For plans taken out up until 31st December 2022, if you decide to cancel, we will refund all the money you have paid. We will do this within 14 days of us receiving notification of cancellation.

If you pay for a plan over 5 or 10 years

If you cancel a plan taken out over 5 or 10 years and cancel after the moratorium period, your instalments will stop. You will not be entitled to any refund of the money you have already paid.

How to make a complaint

If you wish to complain please contact our Client Care Department who will acknowledge your complaint within 2 working days and will do their utmost to ensure any complaint is dealt with as quickly as possible.

Regulation

The Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plan is not a regulated financial services product and as such is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority or covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Law

English law applies to this agreement. This Key Features Summary applies to Distinct Cremations Prepaid Funeral Plans purchased from 18/04/2022.
