A doctor's fee of £82 used to be charged by the doctor who verified a death. This fee was for the preparation of the legal cremation paperwork. However, as of 9th September 2024, the Government has changed the way deaths are verified. As a result, families no longer have to pay any doctor's fees when arranging a cremation for their loved one.

There is a legal requirement to independently measure emissions emitted by a crematorium annually. These must be submitted to the local authority as evidence of permit compliance. Data from the Westerleigh Group demonstrates their crematoria are operating well below the set legal limits for emissions to air.

Westerleigh Group is committed to being net zero by 2032 and this is being achieved by operating modern abated cremation equipment in addition to a programme of retrofitting older equipment. In 2024, Westerleigh Group was abating 83% of all cremations* carried out across 41 operational sites which is an improvement from the 70% recorded in 2022 and far exceeds the government targets of 50%.

A Distinct Cremations funeral plan includes the essential elements required for a funeral, such as collection and care of the deceased, the coffin and cremation and scattering or hand-delivery of the ashes to family members.

Additional costs, such as flowers or a wake, are not included. You might choose to set aside a contribution to these items if you want them.

A direct cremation is the most straightforward and simple way to say goodbye. If you're looking for a fuss, worry and tradition-free funeral, with little stress and low expense, then a direct cremation may be the perfect solution for you.

Get in touch with us for personalised guidance on how a direct cremation could be the right choice for your needs. Call us on 01543 211997 today.

In terms of the financial cost, a direct cremation is the cheapest funeral option available. The average cost of a direct cremation in the UK is £1,628. This is on average £2,882 cheaper* than a traditional funeral with a service.

However, the low price point doesn't mean that a direct cremation is lacking in compassionate support and respectful care throughout the process.

*Based on the cost of a traditional funeral at £4,510 vs a direct cremation funeral at £1,628 (SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2026, sunlife.co.uk/funeral-costs)

As part of Westerleigh Group, Distinct Cremations own and operate 42 crematoriums across the UK mainland. Pure Cremation own and operate one crematorium in Hampshire.

Both providers offer funeral services nationwide. Distinct Cremations only use their own crematoriums ensuring the quality of care and service is consistent. Pure Cremation use crematoriums owned by other companies to fulfil many of their cremations.

We take pride in offering the deceased a dignified send-off. While in our care we wash their body, wash and comb their hair and dress them before the cremation.

We’ll keep the deceased dressed in the same clothes they were wearing when they entered our care unless otherwise requested. If you’ve got a specific outfit you’d like them to wear, just let us know and provide it prior to the cremation.

Would thoroughly recommend Direct Cremation.I bought a plan for my dad and when he passed a few weeks ago I was worried about what would happen to him but Kerry who I can't praise enough from Direct Cremation supported me and explained what would happen every step of the way, reassuring me my dad would be looked after whilst in their care. Her empathy and understanding were simply amazing. She is definitely in the right role and helped ease the pain of my loss more than she will ever know. I felt that I was involved in dad's cremation even though I had handed it over to them. She even called once dad's ashes were returned to check all was ok. Would absolutely choose Direct Cremation again.

Kind, thoughtful and patient funeral arranger. They gently guided me through the process and options. Then kept in touch as we as a family discussed and chose how we wanted the service to be. They kept me aware of where my much loved one was which was comforting at such a confusing time. And also at what happens afterwards. Very highly rated.

Recently took out 2 funeral plans for myself and my wife. After doing research with a number of different companies we decided on Distinct Cremation. We feel we made the right choice after speaking to Tracey. She was very professional kind and patient. She explained everything to us and answered all our questions. Follow up phone call from Tracey today to check we had received all the paperwork and that we were happy with everything that had been arranged. We would highly recommend Distinct Cremation for a first class service.

The service I received from day one was excellent. Maxine showed both empathy & patience, concerning our loss. She explained clearly the necessary steps & paperwork I needed to complete in order for the cremation to take place. It was so effortless & each stage was communicated & explained well. I cannot rate them highly enough, for their professionalism & care during a difficult time for us.
