The first modern cremation in the UK occurred in 1885, kickstarting the adoption of cremations by the British public. Learn more about the history of cremations in the UK.

Direct cremations are a dignified and simple way to say farewell without the pressures and costs of a traditional funeral. They involve cremating the body without a ceremony or mourners present and provide you and your family with the flexibility to commemorate your loved one's life in your own time and manner.

This allows for a personal and meaningful celebration or wake at a place and time of your choosing. Cost-effective and straightforward, direct cremations offer a less stressful alternative, enabling you to honour the deceased in a way that feels right for you, surrounded by comfort and support.

Different funeral types have different environmental considerations.

Due to the use of the cremator which heats to very high temperatures, cremation tends to have higher energy consumption and emissions. Efficient cremation initiatives can mitigate some of these environmental impacts. At our crematoriums, we invest in both energy-saving and abatement technologies.

Traditionally, burials include embalming and the preservation chemicals used in this process can contribute to land contamination. However, eco-friendly alternatives, such as woodland burials are available.

Ultimately, the eco-friendliness of the funeral depends on your choice of provider and their environmental practices.

If you have purchased a cremation plan with a single payment or over a period of up to 12 months, you can cancel your cremation plan within the first 30 days and receive all your money back. If you cancel after 30 days you will get most of your money back, minus a £275 cancellation fee.

If you have purchased a cremation plan over 5 or 10 years and cancel your plan within 12 months, you will get a full refund of all payments paid. If you cancel after 12 months (the moratorium period), your instalments will stop and you will not be entitled to any refund of the money you have already paid. You can read more on our T&Cs page.

I was nervous about an unattanded cremation but there was no need. From the time my husband passed away to after the delivery of his ashes to me in time for Christmas everything was handled with so much kindness and compassion and quiet efficiency. I was reticent about not seeing him laid out but I had valuable and more meaningful time with him at home before he was collected. The Funeral Directors who collected him were amazing, affording my husband the care and dignity he deserved, and making sure they knew what I wanted for him. They even asked if I would like to walk in front of the vehicle with one of them which was a lovely touch. I have my own unattended cemation plan and now I have experienced this I feel reassured that when the time comes my family will be looked after. Thank you Distinct Cremations.

They’re absolutely amazing so helpful and supportive all the way along, I recently lost my dad and he chose this sort of cremation. Nothing is too much trouble for them. My dad was cremated in Essex and they brought his ashes all the way to Wales. Maxine, the lady who was supporting me was just one in 1 million always there to listen always there to help. A big thank you to all of you, Tracy.**

Both my parents died within the last 2 years, and I used Direct Cremations' services for each, helped with utmost kindness by Maxine. Communication throughout was excellent and sensitive, I thought price was reasonable, and the delivery of the ashes was carried out with dignity. I found the virtual memorial service we were able to take up for my mother extremely moving, and only wish it had been able to be offered when my father passed, but it is a lovely addition to the range of services offered. I'm very glad I happened upon Distinct Cremations.

My mother decided she wanted a simple cremation after her death to lesson the burden placed upon me, as my brother and father had already passed away. She chose Distinct Cremations & paid for her funeral when she was alive and well. My mum sadly passed away recently & I was left to deal with all the associated responsibilities which understandably proved upsetting & emotionally stressful. The only thing that provided some comfort was the professional & sympathetic way that Distinct Cremations handled my mother’s funeral. A lovely lady by the name of Sarah Miller personally oversaw every detail needed for my mum’s final wishes & it was a pleasure speaking with Sarah at a time of great sadness. I can’t recommend any higher than that of District Cremations, with the dignity & understanding provided by them at a time when it is truly needed. RIP mum x
